A practical guide to paying off debt while sticking to a budget

Managing debt alongside everyday spending is one of the hardest parts of personal finance. Here is a practical approach that keeps your budget intact while making real progress.

A practical guide to paying off debt while sticking to a budget

Debt and budgeting have a complicated relationship. Paying debt off aggressively can leave your budget so tight that one unexpected expense sends everything off track.

Start with a clear picture

List every debt — the lender, balance, interest rate, minimum payment, and what you are actually paying. This list can be uncomfortable to look at. Look at it anyway.

The two debt payoff strategies

The avalanche method: pay the minimum on everything, then put all extra money towards the highest interest rate debt. Mathematically the most efficient.

The snowball method: pay the minimum on everything, then target the smallest balance first. You get quick wins that build momentum.

The best method is the one you will actually stick to.

Build debt payments into your budget

Treat debt repayment as a committed expense. Decide at the start of each month exactly how much you are paying — including any overpayment. Once it is committed, you stop negotiating with yourself.

Build a small emergency fund first

A buffer of £500 to £1,000 absorbs most small emergencies without reaching for a credit card. Without any buffer, one unexpected cost adds to the debt you are trying to clear.

Track your progress

Record your balance on each debt every month. Seeing the numbers fall reinforces that the system is working. A projected payoff date turns an abstract number into a finish line.

When the budget feels too tight

You have two levers: increase income or reduce spending. The maths of debt is relentless — the faster you pay it off, the less it costs you in money and in stress.
